Ginger Bug

I saw this great video on YouTube today. I’m just learning how to make my own fermented drinks lately. There are many recipes to be found. The one in this video is very simple. I’m going to start one this weekend.

Ginger Bug Recipe (Mary’s Nest)

  • 2 tbsp (heaping) grated ginger
  • 1 tbsp white sugar
  • 2 tbsp filtered water or spring water if chlorinated
  • 1 qt mason jar

Peel and grate ginger. Add all ingredients to mason jar. Stir ingredients with a wooden spoon or “chopstick”. Cover jar with cheesecloth or a paper coffee filter, fasten with a string or rubber band. Add above ingredients every day for 5 days.

After the 5 days, 1/4 cup of the ginger bug can be added to any sweetened drink that you wish to become carbonated. Decant the drink into a seal-able bottle. Left undisturbed, it becomes a carbonated drink.

*Unused ginger bug can be stored in fridge, just cover the car with a plastic lid and “feed” it once a week.

Below are a few websites that have recipes of ginger bug and similar different variations of fermented drinks. There are many more to be found as well.
